A family shopping for fresh produce

A larger grocery pack is not automatically the cheaper purchase for your household. It needs to be used, stored and enjoyed before it becomes waste. Start with what you already have and the meals you realistically plan to prepare, then compare offers against that list.

Price Perks Hub may earn a commission from eligible purchases made through offers on our store pages, at no extra cost to you.

Shop the cupboard before the promotion

Check the fridge, freezer and pantry for items you can use. Build a few meals around those ingredients and list the missing pieces. This helps prevent a promotional display from deciding the whole basket. Note household preferences and dietary requirements so that a discounted item does not become an unused experiment.

Calculate a consistent unit price

Compare products using the same unit, such as cost per kilogram or litre, while checking that the products are genuinely comparable. Pack sizes and product concentrations can differ. A label showing a large saving against an original price does not tell you whether another size or brand offers a better current value.

Include the amount you can actually use

Imagine a large pack costing 8 and a smaller one costing 5. If half the large pack is likely to be discarded, its lower shelf unit price may not represent a saving in your kitchen. These are example numbers, not a current offer. Consider storage space, preparation time and the food's own handling instructions.

Keep multi-buy offers tied to a plan

Buy several units only when you already expect to use them. Check whether a promotion requires particular sizes or flavours and whether mixing products qualifies. Avoid adding a second item simply because the first one advertises a bundle price. A cheaper basket can contain fewer products without missing anything your household needs.

Review the bill with your meal plan

Keep delivery, service charges and substitutions in the comparison for online orders. Inspect the order promptly and follow food storage guidance. Over time, note which purchases are regularly used and which are repeatedly wasted. That information can improve grocery decisions more reliably than chasing a different headline promotion every week.
